More than five years in the making, Bambi (1942) tells the coming-of-age story of a young fawn who grows up to become the Great Prince of the Forest! To capture the realistic movements of the animals, Disney animators studied film footage of deer in the wild, as well as two live deer that lived at the studio — named Bambi and Faline of course. Along with his friends Flower and Thumper, Bambi navigates the trials of growing up, as he learns the value of friendship and perseverance!

One of the first conservation-awareness movies made, a real break-through in Disney animation came when animator Marc Davis studied a book on baby behavior and endowed the animals in Bambi with a range of human facial expressions. The impressionistic art styling of the backgrounds rendered by Chinese American artist Tyrus Wong prompted a reporter to note, “Reviewers will hesitate to describe Bambi as a cartoon… It is more like a fine painting.”
